What HVAC Repair And Replacement Actually Costs In Washington

Repairs: what drives the price
- The part itself. A capacitor, contactor, igniter or flame sensor is inexpensive. A control board, blower motor or gas valve is a middle tier. A compressor or evaporator coil is the expensive end.
- Access. A furnace in an open garage is quicker than one in a crawlspace you have to crab-walk into.
- Refrigerant. If the system uses R-22, expect the refrigerant portion to be significant. R-410A is far cheaper per pound.
- Diagnostic time. An intermittent fault takes longer to find than a dead capacitor.
Replacement: what drives the price
- Capacity and efficiency. Higher SEER2 and AFUE ratings cost more up front and less to run.
- Single stage, two stage or modulating. Comfort and running cost improve as you go up; so does the invoice.
- Ductwork. If the returns are undersized or runs are damaged, fixing that is part of doing the job properly.
- Venting and gas line. Moving from an 80 percent furnace to a 95 percent one means new PVC venting and condensate drainage.
- Electrical. Panel capacity matters, especially converting to a heat pump.
- Permits and disposal. Both real line items.
How to compare quotes fairly
Put them side by side on these points: equipment model numbers and capacity, whether a load calculation was done, what happens to the ductwork, what the warranty covers on parts versus labor, and whether permits are included. Two quotes that differ by thousands usually differ on these, not on greed.
Rebates worth asking about
Washington utilities frequently offer rebates on heat pumps and high-efficiency equipment, and federal incentives have applied to qualifying heat pump installations. Ask your utility and ask your contractor, because the paperwork often has to be filed at install time.
