Furnace Short Cycling: Why It Starts And Stops Every Few Minutes
Short cycling means the furnace shuts down before the house reaches the thermostat setting, then fires again a few minutes later. It burns more fuel, wears components out early and never really warms the house evenly.
Restricted airflow
The most common cause by a wide margin. A dirty filter, closed supply registers, a crushed duct in the crawlspace or an undersized return all reduce airflow across the heat exchanger. Less air means the heat exchanger gets too hot, the high limit switch opens for safety, and the burners shut down. The blower keeps running to cool it, the limit resets, and the cycle repeats.
Start with the filter. Then open every register in the house, including in rooms you do not use. Closing vents does not save money on a forced air system; it raises static pressure and causes exactly this problem.
Flame sensor

Oversized furnace
A furnace with far more capacity than the house needs will satisfy the thermostat quickly, shut off, and repeat. This is extremely common in older Washington homes that have been insulated and re-windowed since the furnace went in, or where the last contractor simply matched the old nameplate. The house feels drafty and the temperature swings.
You cannot fix oversizing with a repair. On replacement, a proper heat loss calculation and a two-stage or modulating furnace solves it.
Thermostat problems
A thermostat in direct sun, above a supply register, or on an exterior wall reads a temperature the rest of the house does not have. Loose wiring at the thermostat or the board causes intermittent drops that look identical to short cycling.
Flue and pressure switch
On high-efficiency furnaces, water in the condensate trap or a partially blocked intake makes the pressure switch open mid-cycle. It shuts down, drains, and tries again.
Worth acting on
Short cycling is rarely dangerous on its own but it is always a symptom of something, and repeated overheating shortens heat exchanger life.
